A mystery shopper (or secret shopper) generally buys a product or service from a pre-selected company and then rates the company in various categories such as customer service and cleanliness. After the interaction with the company, mystery shoppers are usually reimbursed for the purchase of the product or service and paid a fee for their time. Mystery shoppers rate a wide range of businesses including, restaurants and hotels.

Mystery shopper jobs can be found through internet searches. Third party companies are contracted to provide mystery shoppers to client businesses. There are numerous websites that enable you to sign up for jobs that may be in your area. There are many legitimate companies that utilize secret shoppers.  As well, there are many not so legitimate websites that charge a fee for a list of these companies.  A word of advice; you should never have to pay for this information or pay to apply for these jobs. With a little time and effort, you can obtain the needed information without cost. The amount of shopping opportunities available will vary due to reasons such as geographic location and metropolitan size and population.
